You can mix TWP Clear with a colored stain as long as you stay within the same series.  For example you can mix TWP 200 Clear with any of the other colors in the 200 Series.

twp stain is uneven and spotted

"My contractor put a second coat of TWP 1501 on horizontal decking too think and uneven, some areas now look glossy and others more saturated.  Is there any way to even this out?"

There are a number of factors that could have caused this issue.  If the deck was not completely cleaned prior to application or if your contractor applied the product too thick.  Regardless you will probably have to strip the TWP Stain off the deck and start again.  We would recommend using our Top To Bottom Deck stripper.  This can be applied with a brush or a broom and then rinsed with a garden hose.

TWP Stain works great on docks and piers and will outlast other similar products on the market.  We would recommend using TWP 200 series stain on your dock.
If you are looking to protect the wood with an environmentally safe penetrant  try our Lox-Wood product.

How do you apply twp stain

TWP Stain Application Tips
  • Mix Preservative thoroughly
  • Apply TWP by brush, pump sprayer or roller
  • Saturate surface with TWP
  • If needed, apply second coat wet on wet
  • Do not let TWP puddle
  • Excessive product that does not penetrate may cause failure
  • Overnight dry time depending on temperature and humidity
  • Do not thin TWP
  • Cleanup with mineral spirits
  • Do not apply below 50 degrees F or above 90 degrees F
  • Coverage rate: 200-400 sq feet per gallon
TWP is designed to penetrate the wood surface and not build a film.  Apply as much material as the wood can absorb.  Over application may leave an oily residue on the surface and may cause an early failure of the stain.  Any material that has not penetrated 3 hours after application must be removed.
